Letter from the University of Virginia to Mrs. Mary Cocke, [manuscript], 18 October 1840.

Eppes describes his impressions of the University of Virginia. He notes the difficulty of retaining a moral character among students whose dissipation includes gambling on the Sabbath. He describes his room on the West Range near the anatomical hall, the high cost of wood, a typical day, and a typical lecture in the Rotunda. He also notes his purchase of Todds' Students Manual, and his desire never to "bring his mother to the grave in tears" and sends advice to family and friends.
